I loved the experiments and lab skills and dissections or looking at things under the microscope and also chemistry creating reactions.

I found it really interesting learning about how things work. From the small scale of atoms bonding together to form molecules to the bigger picture such as how muscles contact allowing us to move.

This is a tough one as even as a small kid I had a huge interest in science and medicine. Being a huge sci-fi geek I think this also pre-disposed me to having a interest in science. When I was younger at school I loved Physics, I just found it so cool how technology allowed us to see other planets. Then as I got older I became fascinated by human biology because when it comes down to it the human body is amazing.

One of the things that made me love science and maths over other things like art was the fact that science by its nature is testable. You make a hypothesis and you test whether it is true or not. Ultimately I found science exciting, interesting and cool.

I always loved the human side of biology. I was very sporty, and so topics like the cardiovascular and respiratory systems always got my interest. But I confess that I didn’t like a lot of science I was taught. I couldn’t see the point in lots of it! It took me a long while to realise how important it is to understand the basic stuff before you can move on to the more complicated and applied aspects of science.

I think I always had a thing for science. Some of it just came to me and I understood it quite easily. Other things were more difficult to understand but if I spent the time to learn it I usually understood it. I was always more interested in human biology and I think that is what really inspired me to study medicine and to later choose to be a scientist as well as a doctor.
